π¬ Module 01 Β· Lecture 1.2
Files, Codecs & Containers!
By the end of this lecture, you'll understand what happens to your video after it's recorded β how it gets compressed, stored, and packaged into a file you can actually edit. No more confusion about MP4 vs MOV! π¦
π€ The Big Idea
Think of It Like a Lunch Box!
When your camera records a video, it doesn't just save a raw pile of photos. It compresses them, packages them up, and puts them in a neat little file. Here's how to think about it:
π±
Imagine a lunch box. π
The lunch box itself = the Container (like MP4 or MOV). It holds everything together.
The way the food is packed = the Codec (like H.264). It decides how tightly everything is compressed to fit.
The whole thing you carry = the File. That's what you drag into DaVinci Resolve!

π¦ Key Term #1
What Is a Container?
CONTAINER
The container is the file format β the wrapper that holds your video, audio, and subtitles together. You see it as the file extension at the end of the filename. Common containers: .MP4, .MOV, .AVI.
ποΈ Key Term #2
What Is a Codec?
CODEC
Codec stands for Compress + Decompress. It's the method used to shrink your video down to a manageable size β and then expand it again when you play it. Common codecs: H.264, H.265, ProRes.
Without a codec, one minute of raw video could be several gigabytes. The codec squeezes it down without destroying the quality. Magic? No β just very clever maths! π€
π Quick Reference
Which Format For What?
Here's all you need to know right now β don't memorise it, just bookmark it:
| Format | Best For | File Size |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 H.264 | YouTube, editing, sharing | Small β |
| MP4 H.265 | 4K footage, better quality | Smaller β β |
| MOV ProRes | Professional editing, cinema | Large β οΈ |
| AVI | Old format, avoid if possible | Very Large β |
Easy rule: For 99% of your editing work β MP4 with H.264 is your best friend. Small file, great quality, works everywhere!
π€― Wait, But Why?
Why Does This Even Matter?
π¬ Because DaVinci Resolve Cares!
When you import footage into DaVinci Resolve, it reads both the container AND the codec. If the codec is something Resolve doesn't support well β your footage might lag, stutter, or refuse to import.
That's why knowing your file format saves you from a lot of unnecessary whoops moments later! π’

π‘ Pro Tip
H.264 MP4 Is Your Best Friend
When in doubt β always go with MP4 and H.264. It works on every device, every platform, and every editing software including DaVinci Resolve.
If you ever receive footage in a weird format that won't import β we'll cover how to handle that in the Advanced module!

Quick Check
What is the difference between a Codec and a Container?
Answer: The Container (like MP4 or MOV) is the wrapper β the lunch box that holds everything. The Codec (like H.264) is how the video is compressed inside that box. Same container, different codec = different quality and file size! π
